On non-negativity of Fukui function indices

Abstract: In this paper we have analyzed the factors which cause Fukui function (FF) indices to be negative, when evaluated in condensed form through crude finite difference approximation. Inability to take care of the relaxation effect and improper charge partitioning techniques have been cited to be the probable reasons. For the first time, we have shown that the “stockholders” charge partitioning technique (i.e., Hirshfeld’s analysis) produces non-negative FF values which, when evaluated through other kinds of charge… Show more

“…CHELPG analysis sometimes agrees with the others and sometimes it does not. What is more, it often produces negative values of atomic softnesses, which are somewhat questionable [87]. They are most probably due to the statistical inaccuracy introduced by the chargefitting procedure.…”

“…[23][24][25][26] A negative Fukui function value means that when adding an electron to the molecule, in some spots the electron density is reduced, alternatively when removing an electron from the molecule, in some spots the electron density grows larger. This is counterintuitive.…”
