On Multi-Domain Network Slicing Orchestration Architecture and Federated Resource Control

Abstract: A sophisticated and efficient network slicing architecture is needed to support the orchestration of network slices across multiple administrative domains. Such multi-domain architecture shall be agnostic of the underlying virtualization and network infrastructure technologies. Its objective is to extend the traditional orchestration, management and control capabilities by means of models and constructs in order to form a well-stitched composition of network slices. To facilitate such composition of networking… Show more

“…ACRA also suggested handing scalability issues for increasing number of admission control requests for consolidated cloud services. A combinatorial approach was developed in [34] to jointly address admission control and resource allocation challenges by using modeling controllers. The proposed technique utilized a set of operating points to ensure the vertical integration and scaling for the stability of workload admission.…”

“…Several technologies such as cloudlets, fog computing, and mobile edge computing have been used in the literature to denote pushing computing resources to the network edge. NFV allows the use of generic hardware with virtual machines running on it to enable network functions in a flexible way [37], [45], [46]. In other words, there is no need to change the entire hardware when implementing new functions.…”

“…Moreover, a MANO instance can be provided to the various tenants by using a MANO-as-a-service paradigm [48]. The orchestration of a network slice spanning across multiple administrative domains is also a challenge that has been tentatively faced by proposing 3GPP-based hierarchical architecture [49]. Many architectures have been suggested, for example, 5G-NORMA proposed a MANO called Software-Defined Mobile Network Orchestrator (SDM-O), which is composed of an inter-slice resource broker for crossslice resource allocation and slice-specific NFV orchestrators [50].…”
