On methodologies to estimate optical-layer power consumption and cost for long-haul WDM networks with optical reach constraint

Abstract: This paper deals with the methodologies to obtain the estimates of optical-layer power consumption and cost for long-haul optical networks using wavelengthdivision multiplexing (WDM) with IP-over-WDM and IPover-MPLS-over-WDM network settings. Such optical networks generally employ wavelength routing at intermediate nodes and are known as wavelength-routed optical networks (WRONs). In WRON-based long-haul networks, optical reach (OR) of a transponder represents the maximum distance over which its optical signal… Show more

“…The software router by Goswami et al [20] studied how to achieve the estimation of optical-layer power consumption and cost for a long distance optical networks using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). The test is implemented on two different networks which are IP-over-WDM and IP-over-MPLSover-WDM networks.…”

“…In [200], the authors investigated the impact of optical reach (OR) of transponders on the total network cost and power consumption in IP-over-WDM and IPover-MPLS-over-WDM networks. Therefore, mixed optical reach nodes and fixed optical reach nodes were examined for the scenarios of automated dynamic resource provisioning and non-automated provisioning.…”
