On-line reversed phase LC-GC by using the new TOTAD (Through Oven Transfer Adsorption Desorption) interface: Application to parathion residue analysis

Abstract: A new interface named TOTAD (Through Oven Transfer Adsorption Desorption) for on‐line coupling reversed phase liquid chromatography to gas chromatography (RPLG‐GC) is presented. TOTAD interface is a great modification of a programmable temperature injector (PTV). Changes affect pneumatics, sample introduction, solvent elimination, and operation mode. The volume of the LC fraction that can be transferred (with a very strong eluent flow during the transfer step) is very high. Manufacturing this system is not dif… Show more

“…New methods have also been developed to analyse pesticide residues in water, employing the TOTAD interface by RPLC-GC 14,15 and by very large volume sampling. 16 Recently, a new method for the direct analysis of pesticide residues in olive oil has been developed.…”

“…The TOTAD interface, whose operation mode has been described elsewhere (25,26,37), was stabilized at either 75 or 100 C and kept at the corresponding value during the transfer step. A helium flow rate of 200 ml/min was used to move the eluent forward from the LC through tbe material placed in the liner, thus allowing analyte retention during solvent venting.…”

“…The through oven transfer adsorption desorption (TOTAD) interface (25,26) has been successfully adapted to on-line RPLC-GC because of its outstanding ability to efficiently eliminate polar .solvents when analyzing complex matrices (11,28,29). The recently reported use of on-line coupled GC-mass spectrometry (MS) via the TOTAD interface has widened the application range of these techniques (37).…”

“…The use of the Through Oven Transfer Adsorption Desorption (TOTAD) interface for the online coupled reversed phase liquid chromatography-gas chromatography (RPLC-GC) (Cortés, Sánchez, Villén, & Vázquez, 2006) avoids this problem. The TOTAD interface operation mode has been described previously (Alario, Pérez, Vázquez, & Villén, 2001;Pérez, Alario, Vázquez, & Villén, 1999. In this fully automated system, the oil is injected directly, with no sample pre-treatment step other than dilution of the oil sample and filtration, while the experimental conditions enable the simultaneous analysis of four classes of compound (sterols, tocopherols, squalene, and triterpenic dialcohols, erythrodiol and uvaol) in one run or the analysis of sterols together with tocopherols.…”
