On-line programming examinations using Web to teach

Abstract: Using the automated code-checking capability of the WebToTeach system, we have built WebToTest, a system for administering on-line programming examination. The system successfully addresses many of the issues raised by recent work in on-line exams by providing reliable automatic checking of exam questions and a secure, restricted programming environment useable by the students during the exam. Its web-based character makes it amenable to distance education applications. Furthermore, because examinations may be … Show more

“…In other examples, student submissions are automatically checked by the test cases developed by instructors. Such test cases are usually only visible to the teaching staff, and the student view is limited to the feedback offered by the system (Arnow & Barshay, 1999;Feldman & Jones, 1997;Jackson & Usher, 1997;Jones, 2000;Reek, 1996). A half-way solution is illustrated by the marmoset platform, a testing system that defines different types of test cases: student test, public test, release tests and secret tests (Spacco et al, 2006).…”

“…One of the main benefits from using online test systems is the capability for automated marking [12]. Although these systems work quite well in most of the cases, they feature certain restrictions related to the dynamic creation of questions.…”

“…TRAKLA [7] and WebtoTest [1] provide good examples of the assessment-driven use of traditionally student-driven technologies. However, this conversion is not always possible.…”
