On land-use and land-cover changes over Lidder Valley in changing environment

Abstract: We have examined the land surface changes in the Lidder Valley of Kashmir in the context of socioeconomy, climate and environmental aspect using geoscience technology. It was found that there are large-scale changes in agriculture, horticulture and built-up in the subject area. Records for horticulture, agriculture and built-up were generated from satellite data. A geodatabase of socioeconomic data is examined and corelated with the land system changes. Furthermore, environmental driving factors like precipita… Show more

“…LULC changes are the result of a multidimensional interaction among institutional, socioeconomic and environmental dynamics [16][17][18]33]. Limited technology and livelihood options have aggravated the competition between different uses, and government policy and tenure insecurity have also played a significant role [7,13,17].…”

“…Recently, geographical information systems (GIS) and remote sensing have been extensively used for LULC mapping and change detection across the world [6,16,[33][34][35]. Moreover, advances in remote sensing such as the use of digital image processing algorithms have increased the use of satellite imageries such as Landsat data in studies concerned with LULC changes across multiple spatial and temporal scales [35,36].…”

“…Land use and land cover change (LUCC) is critical for understanding the interaction between human activities and global environmental changes in biological diversity, the carbon cycle, and greenhouse gas emissions (Hurtt et al, ; Moss et al, ; Rafiq et al, ; West et al, ). LUCC modeling has proven to be an important tool for analyzing the driving mechanism and spatial distribution of LUCCs in the past and/or possible future (Alexander et al, ; Verburg et al, ; Walsh et al, ; Wu et al, ).…”

“…To evaluate the interaction between human activity and the environment, LULC classification is a crucial technique (4,5) . Remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) have been used extensively throughout the world for LULC mapping and change detection (2,(6)(7)(8)(9)(10) and provide more effective approaches to conservation and management of natural resources than the conventional techniques (3,11) . Monitoring changes in Earth's surface over time through remote sensing is a valuable tool for detecting changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC).…”
