On Kottler's path: Origin and evolution of the premetric program in gravity and in electrodynamics

Abstract: In 1922, Kottler put forward the program to remove the gravitational potential, the metric of spacetime, from the fundamental equations in physics as far as possible. He successfully applied this idea to Newton's gravitostatics and to Maxwell's electrodynamics, where Kottler recast the field equations in premetric form and specified a metric-dependent constitutive law. We will discuss the basics of the premetric approach and some of its beautiful consequences, like the division of universal constants into two … Show more

“…From a physical viewpoint it represents self-interaction and is related to the non-linear nature of the gravitational interaction in general relativity 3 . In principle, one can consider the total energy-momentum Σ (total) µ that includes both the gravitational and matter contributions, and rewrite the field equations (25) as…”

“…Although Kottler's premetric program works well in Newtonian gravity [1] and even in a flat gravitomagnetism model [5], it seems to be completely unacceptable in general relativity (GR). This is due to the well-known fact that Einstein's theory is essentially based on a pseudo-Riemann geometry with the metric tensor as its primary variable.…”

“…Lately we followed in [18] the program of Kottler of 1922 to remove the metric tensor of spacetime, the gravitational potential within general relativity theory (GR), from the fundamental laws of classical electromagnetism and gravity as far as possible. In particular, we applied this to the theory of gravity [31] in that we started from a translational gauge theory of gravity, also known as teleparallel theory of gravity (TG) 1 .…”
