On intuitive use, physicality and tangible user interfaces

Abstract: >>Intuitive to use<< is so often assigned to tangible user interfaces (TUIs) and physical interaction, for example, in conference lectures, informal communication and in scientific publications, that it seems obvious that physicality evokes intuitive use. However, on closer inspection the topic becomes less obvious. It appears that the use of the term intuitive are diverse and a common definition is still missing; this is true in general for the field HCI but it is particularly true for the fields physicality … Show more

“…The directness and naturalness of tangible interactions is known to reduce cognitive load. The inherent physicality, familiarity and embodiment offered by tangible computing systems facilitate the subconscious application of prior knowledge, providing opportunities to design metaphor-based intuitive and effective interactions [38]. Hurtienne et al propose a continuum of knowledge and describe that intuitiveness in interactions can stem from any level of that continuum: (1) Innate, (2) Sensorimotor, (3) Culture, (4) Expertise and (5) Tools, as long as they are unconsciously applied by the user [34].…”

“…Arbeiten der IUUI-Gruppe (Intuitive use of user interfaces) verwenden eine Definition der Intuitivität, die auf der unbewussten Anwendung bereits erlernten Wissens basiert (vgl. Mohs et al, 2007;Israel et al, 2009). Diese liefern wertvolle Hinweise, umfassen aber möglicherweise nicht alles, was aus Nutzersicht das Erlebnis ausmacht.…”

“…To meaningfully map tangible input actions to output representations and enhance naturalness and intuitiveness in interactions, several researchers have explored and advocated the use of Image Schema based metaphors as a conceptual design tool [3,20,23,40]. Image schemas are the recurring dynamic patterns of sensorymotor experiences (or bodily interactions) that structure our understanding of the world [25,33].…”
