On integration of interface design methods: Can debates be resolved?

Abstract: There have been many debates on how to design the human-computer interface (HCI). Often, one can find that different views in a debate are simply because these views are attached to different aspects which embody the same thing. In other words, prior to giving an effective judgment of a debate, one needs to establish an understanding of the 'total' aspects of a thing the debate is about. Following this line of thinking, in this paper, we propose an understanding of the 'total' aspects of designing HCI, which i… Show more

“…A web site, an information resource on the World Wide Web (WWW), can be regarded as one complete computer-based product and system. 9 A web site can be described as a group of interface and functional attributes, which are closely related with each other to satisfy users' needs and to obtain their satisfaction in a competitive market of informationservices and online/offline sales. Web sites can divided into four categories by use purposes-entertainment, information, communication, and commerce: 10 11 an entertainment web site provides diversion and relaxation to users who want to escape from the stressful reality; an information web sites helps users to obtain useful information more quickly and more easily; a communication web site facilitates communicating with others with similar interests via online; and a commerce web site provides an online market place where users meet to sell and purchase goods and services.…”

“…An interface can be viewed as an artifact or product; design of an interface can then be viewed as design of an artifact or a product. A total design framework for interface was proposed by Lin, Zhang, and Koubek (). In this framework, interface design is divided into three phases: conceptual, layout, and detailed.…”

“…Uma interface pode ser entendida como algo que existe entre duas partes e cuja função é a de facilitar a troca de alguma "substância" entre essas partes. Neste caso as partes são o operador e o acelerador e a substância é a informação ou, dependendo da forma como esta informação é manipulada, conhecimento [154].…”
