On holographic thermalization and gravitational collapse of massless scalar fields

Abstract: In this paper we study thermalization in a strongly coupled system via AdS/CFT.Initially, the energy is injected into the system by turning on a spatially homogenous scalar source coupled to a marginal composite operator. The thermalization process is studied by numerically solving Einstein's equations coupled to a massless scalar field in the Poincare patch of AdS 5 . We define a thermalization time t T on the AdS side, which has an interpretation in terms of a spacelike Wilson loop W (l ≃ 1 T ) in CFT. Here … Show more

“…The AdS-Vaidya spacetime corresponds to pressureless matter shock collapsing along an ingoing null trajectory, and forming a black hole. The massless scalar system was further studied using simulations of numerical gravity in [28,29], which gave further evidence for approximating the Vaidya spacetime to model the CFT process. As a further example, the AdS 4 -Vaidya spacetime is known to arise as an exact dual spacetime of a CFT process where one turns on a time dependent spatially constant electric field in one of the field theory directions [30].…”

“…Recently holographic thermalization has been explored using numerical methods as well [5,6,7]. Numerous work is devoted to AdS 3 [8,9,10,11,12,13], and issues related to stability [14,15].…”

“…Similar studies can be found in [30,31]. Alternatively, the gravitational collapse can be characterized by a collapsing shell, which results in the isotropic thermalization [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39].…”
