On Glandular Structures at the Corneo‐scleral Junction in Man and Swine; The So‐called «manz‘ Glands»

Abstract: In 1859 Manz gave an account of some peculiar structures at the corneo-scleral junction in swine and, although their nature as true glands has been disputed, they have been called >>M anz' glands<<.According to Manz they were round vesicles with oval stomata, surrounded by a prominence. The inner wall of the vesicles was covered by epithelium. They contained large round cells and a fine granulated pulp. Most of the vesicles were situated on the nasal side of the cornea, some on the temporal side and only few a… Show more

“…I n agreement with M a n z ( 18,58), Aurell & Kornerup (1949) found that the glands of Manz werc prexcnt only in the pig in the form of rudimentary lacrimal glands nasal to the cornea, and this is now generally accepted (Duke-Elder 1961).…”

“…Ninety years later, in 1949, Aurell and Kornerup suggested that these so called ''glands of Manz'' were rudimentary components of the lacrimal apparatus responsible for secreting mucin. 3 As recently as 1961, Duke-Elder considered the palisades of Vogt to be functionless vestigial remnants of these glands. 4 It was not until 2005 that Dua et al 5 demonstrated histologically the existence of limbal epithelial crypts within the palisades of Vogt, structures that accurately fit Manz's original description nearly 150 years prior.…”

“…eye. Corneal pigmentation may occur in limbal crypts (Aurell & Kornerup 1949) and perilimbal pigmentation as complete ring round the cornea. H. Virchow (1910) found such pigmentation in more than 0.3% of Caucasians (cited in Duke Elder…”
