Abstract: This paper focuses on the notion of politeness formulae in linguistic politeness research. It argues that the formal make-up of politeness formulae is crucially motivated by their function. The major claim of this paper is thus that there is a link between form and function of expressions of linguistic politeness. The usefulness of this account will be illustrated by the analysis of empirical data from Slavic languages and German. Reference to Roman Jakobson's markedness theory will show that the choice of lin… Show more

“…In her non-contextual approach to linguistic politeness, Schlund (2014) claims that it is possible to describe politeness formulae systematically on pragmatic, semantic and formal grounds. If we restrict the viability of our analysis to the concrete contexts, which are necessarily unlimited, it is impossible to carry out linguistic politeness research at meso-and macro-levels (Terkourafi 2005).…”

“…Their model is thorough and comprehensive; it particularly provides a firm foundation for theoretical and empirical foundation for studies in politeness scholarship (Locher & Watts, 2005). In fact, Schlund (2014) has argued that the politeness approach of Brown and Levinson (1987) is ‗the most famous and most frequently applied model of politeness', and it is one of the most cited in im/politeness research (Culpeper, 2011b).…”
