On Fibres, Parenchyma and Intermediate Forms in the Genus Miconia (Melastomataceae)

Abstract: The systematic value of this phenomenon is still uncertain. In other genera of the Melastomataceae, however, as well as in other families of the Myrtales it has also been observed.

“…VAN VLIET in preparation, KOEK-NooRMAN &TER WELLE in preparation, andKOEK-NooRMAN 1978 andKOEK-NOORMAN et al 1979)share many wood anatomical tendencies with Lythraceae. Narrow rays of mainly erect cells, septate libriform fibres, scanty paratracheal parenchyma, and different degrees of fibre dimorphism in many genera all recall Lythraceae.…”

“…In axial parenchyma they occurred in fusiform cells and also in individual cells of parenchyma strands. Septa in axial parenchyma have been recorded in the Guttiferae and probably Quiinaceae (Vestal1937), Icacinaceae (Bailey & Howard 1941), Burseraceae (see Webber 93 1941), Quiinaceae and Caesalpiniaceae (Metcalfe & Chalk 1950), and Melastomataceae (Ter Welle & Koek-Noorman 1978). In all these instances the occurrence ofseptate parenchyma within a family is limited to a single species or a few taxa.…”
