On Element Selection in STAR-RIS for NOMA Transmission

Abstract: Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising solution to build a programmable wireless propagation environment through reflecting the incident signals with a large number of low-cost passive elements. Recently, a novel concept of simultaneous transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) has been proposed, where incident signals can be transmitted and reflected to users located on different sides of the surface. Therefore, there are two coefficients that needed to be configured for each element of STAR… Show more

“…In next-generation technology, Non-orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) allocates different power to known nodes (a node whose own position is known) and target nodes which have different residual energy in WSNs, saving the known node energy consumption problem by using the Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) technique. Therefore, this technique can be extended to be used in next-generation networks for larger-scale scenarios [2]. Localization information is one of the basic elements of sensor network monitoring data and in many cases is the basis of the application.…”

“…In contrast to [94]- [97], which focused on dowlink NOMA-based systems, Sheng et al [98] examined STAR-RIS for uplink that enables several users to communicate in a power-domain NOMA environment while sharing the same time-frequency resources. Though users have nearly the same spread power and distance from the AP as they approach the cell boundary, system performance degrades at this point.…”
