On designing and testing distributed virtual environments

Abstract: Summary Distributed real‐time (DRT) systems are among the most complex software systems to design, test, maintain, and evolve. The existence of components distributed over a network often conflicts with real‐time requirements, leading to design strategies that depend on domain‐specific and even application‐specific knowledge. Distributed virtual environment (DVE) systems are DRT systems that connect multiple users instantly with each other and with a shared virtual space over a network. DVE systems deviate fro… Show more

“…Beyond entertainment, virtual collaborative environments have the potential to enhance skills training and productivity [27]. User experience is also highly important in virtual collaborative environments [65]. Although other researchers have created spatial skills training applications using immersive VR, as described in Section 2.2, we were not able to find any examples of such applications which leveraged a multi-user collaborative environment for this purpose.…”

“…Debugging faults and errors in distributed systems is hard. There are many reasons for the inherent difficulty, and these have been extensively discussed in the literature [Beschastnikh et al 2016;Schütz 1994;Valadares et al 2016]. In particular, the non determinism of concurrent computation and communication makes it hard to reliably observe error conditions and failures that expose the bugs in the code.…”

“…Distributed virtual environment [1] is one of the most important application fields of distributed simulation technology [2,3]. It consists of lots of subsystems on different nodes and constructs an interactive virtual world for geographical distributed users to support them carry out some activities such as military training, online games, and distance education in the virtual world.…”
