Mäkinen, J. 2014 (January): Sedimentology of an ice lobe margin esker with implications for the deglacial dynamics of the Finnish Lake District lobe trunk.We provide evidence for the subglacial to ice-marginal successive deposition of the Lohtaja-Kivijärvi ice lobe margin esker influenced by the changes in the meltwater delivery and proglacial water depth within the Finnish Lake District lobe trunk during the last deglaciation in Finland. The study is mostly based on the sedimentological data from the 100 km long esker chain with 15 logged sites. The long breaks in the lobe margin esker and the re-emerged deposition along the stable position of the subglacial meltwater route were related to the discontinuities and reappearances of the neighbouring eskers. This considerable variability in the meltwater discharge and debris transport under the described deglacial conditions cannot be explained by markedly decreased meltwater production due to palaeoclimatic factors or lack of debris within the trunk region. The primary control on the changes in meltwater availability and related esker deposition was thus due to the spatial and temporal changes in ice mass properties and shifting of the meltwater flow paths within the trunk. These changes were initiated by the topographically higher and partly supra-aquatic Suomenselkä watershed area with subsequent deepening of the proglacial water during the deglaciation. The understanding of the long-lived esker deposition along the former ice-stream trunk margin adds to the evaluation of palaeoglaciological reconstructions and geomorphologically based spatial models for ice-stream landscapes.

The Quaternary stratigraphy in Finland is discussed on the basis of an example from the Oulainen area of Ostrobothnia. Organogenic deposits found beneath till at this site are correlated with the Eemian Interglacial on biostratigraphical evidence. This is confirmed by TL dates of 97,000 ± 18,000 B.P. and 150,000 ± 30,000 B.P., whereas a finite radiocarbon date of 63,200 +5500 ‐3200 B.P. is probably too young. Correlation of the Weichselian stratigraphy is based on deep‐sea oxygen isotope data, in which the variations in isotope ratios are assumed to reflect global changes in climate and fluctuations in the volume of the ice‐caps. It is concluded on the latter grounds that Finland must have been free of ice at two periods during the Early Weichselian but at least for the most part covered by ice thereafter up to the final deglaciation. The sediments attributed to the only known Weichselian interstadial in Finland, the Perapohjola Interstadial, are taken to correspond most probably to the Brørup, although some may represent the Odderade, Information on the Weichselian till stratigraphy in the Oulainen area is largely confined to the deglaciation phase, the relatively complex nature of which suggests that complete reconstruction of the earlier phases of the Weichselian in an area such as Finland, located towards the centre of the ice sheet, is scarcely feasible by the methods currently available.

Associations of flutings, drumlins, hummocks and transverse ridges were created in the inner marginal zone of the ice sheet, where, nearer the ice margin, the ice was already thinner and the former higher flow velocity had slowed down due to the decreased volume of transported ice. However, as the ice flow mechanics tend to favour certain higher flow velocities, which can, to some extent, even be self-supporting, the speed of the ice did not slow down hornogenously throughout the ice mass. Certain parts of the ice continued to move at the higher speed but an increasing number of units appeared, where the velocity had dropped down to a considerably lower level. In the resulting flow pattern, wiith fast and slow units of ice flowing side by side, a drag effect contributed to a spiral secondary flow between the flow units of differential velocity.Both depositional and erosional processes were involved and, depending on the balance between them, the resulting bed configuration could be formed by either one or by a combined effect of both of these processes. However, faster flow regime more often favoured erosion and in areas of lower regime deposition more often prevailed. Consequently troughs were formed in the areas of higher velocity, while ridges and other positive landforms were created in the areas of lower velocity. The spiral flow frequently transferred drift from the trough area to the area of lower flow regime, and therefore the flute-ridges and drumlins were often formed depositionally by the combined effect of the slow parallel flow and the spiral flow component. Rogen ridges indicate an undulating flow. This could also exist simultaneously with the other kinds of flow and many landforms owe their characteristics to their combined effect. * Prof. Dr. Risto AARIO, Department of Geology, University of Oulu, Finland blages.
