On Dactylogyridae (Monogenea) of four species of characid fishes from Brazil

Abstract: Material collected from the fishes from the dams and fish farms of the Departamento Nacional de Obras contra as Secas (DNOCS) and from the tanks of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Station was examined in order to analyze the index and the infestation of Monogenea. Specimens of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus), pirapitinga (Piaractus brachypomus) and the hybrid tambacu (Colossoma macropomum X Piaractus mesopotamicus) were examined and five species of Monogenea were identified including:

“…Mymarothecium viatorum has been described from P. brachypomus in the Oder River, Poland (BOEGER et al, 2002), and following was reported in this same host farmed in Brazil (COHEN & KOHN, 2005). For farmed P. brachypomus in northeastern Brazil, Cohen & Kohn (2009) registered occurrence of Anacanthorus penilabiatus and M. viatorum.…”

“…Characidae is the fourth most diverse family of fishes and the most diverse among Neotropical fishes, with more than 1,000 species distributed from the southern USA to northern Patagonia (Argentina) in South America (Ornelas-García et al 2008;Mirande 2010). The dactylogyrid fauna of characids has been extensively studied in northern South America, especially in Brazil (Thatcher 2006;Cohen & Kohn 2009;Cohen et al 2013) and, in lesser extent, in Central America (Mendoza-Franco et al 2009). At present, the knowledge of monogenean parasitizing characids in the southern boundaries of the family distribution, represented by the Pampasic region in central Argentina, is scarce and fragmentary, in comparison with their northern counterparts.…”

“…In P. brachypomus, there was a predominance of M. viatorum, A. spathulatus and A. penilabiatus, which presented aggregated dispersion, a distribution pattern attributed to the strategy of reproduction of the parasites, as well as the heterogeneity of the immune system of hosts (Poulin 2013). Anacanthorus penilabiatus occurred only in two farms and at low infection levels, in contrast to what was reported for P. brachypomus farmed in the state of Ceará (Cohen and Kohn 2009). Only M. viatorum and A. spathulatus occurred in all four farms.…”
