On cultural studies, again

Abstract: This article reflects on the state of cultural studies today. It asks to what extent cultural studies can move with the times, now that we live in a radically altered world dominated by global challenges such as climate change, the rise of China, and technological transformation. It points to the importance of focusing on cultural studies’ institutional and material conditions of possibility if it is to continue to exist as a distinct intellectual field.

“…The growing elderly population and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases have heightened the demand for skilled healthcare professionals, particularly, nurses, who rely on collaboration to deliver effective healthcare services (Stokes and Iskander, 2021). By fostering collaboration across cultural barriers, professional service providers can develop cooperative relationships with diverse experts, leading to the generation of innovative ideas and care practices through close interaction and teamwork (Ang, 2020). Homeyer et al (2018) and Liu (2020) argue that IPE necessitates initiating collaboration through the formation of interdisciplinary teams.…”

“…Of course, this list is not intended to be exhaustive and it reflects my personal and academic interests. As shown by other contributors to this series, the list could be extended by calls for more activist and less white cultural studies (Johnson and Joseph, 2020) that is anchored in empirical research of actually existing cultures and lived experience (Guimarães Corrêa, 2020; Woo, 2020) and has a futurist outlook (Powers, 2020) on such pressing – and, indeed, transnational – contemporary challenges as climate change (Ang, 2020), democracy deficit, culture wars, and the datafication of the social fabric (Couldry, 2020). Without the pressures to speak absolute truths (Ang, 1996), cultural studies occupies a privileged position to answer all the multiple calls so to arrive at a better understanding of cultural complexity.…”

“…The circuit represents corresponding links among representation, production, consumption, distribution, and regulation which later produce shared meanings. Cultural studies is an inter-discipline interested in cultural practices where contestation and negotiation over meaning are at stake (Ang, 2020). The research focuses on applying cultural studies in film, particularly a 2011-American documentary about centuries-old Japanese food, sushi, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, directed by David Gelb, who recently also conceptualized the Netflix series, Chef's Table (Leer, 2022).…”
