On Coulomb’s inverse square law

Abstract: The famous inverse square law in electrostatics, first published in 1785 by C. A. Coulomb, was strongly contested during the next 40 years, especially in Germany. Therefore, at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg a replication of the apparatus described by Coulomb was made, and the reasons were investigated why none of his contemporaries succeeded in reproducing his results. In addition the respective theoretical concepts of Coulomb, his supporters, and his opponents were analyzed.

“…The essence of equation (8) is a differential surface force element (equivalent to the Coulomb force) for every non-tangential intersection of the arbitrary surface S with the straight line between the two charge distributions. Equation (8) may have the appearance of merely stating the point to point, action-ata-distance [31,32] property of Coulomb's law [33,34]. However, the recasting process of the prior work shows that the Coulomb stress equation is mathematically compatible with Maxwell's stress equation [9].…”

“…Although Coulomb's experiment appears to be simple and in a way straightforward in retrospect, several difficulties were encountered in working with the reconstructed torsion balance. Even though a lot of work went into debugging the instrument, it finally turned out that data corresponding to Coulomb's law could only be produced in using a Faraday cage to shield external charges that made the behavior of the balance somewhat inaccurate [3,4].…”
