On Carnitine Content of the Human Breast Milk

Abstract: SummaryThe concentration of total carnitine in human breast milk remained at a constant mean level near 62.9 range: 56.0-69.8/ nmoles/ml during the first 21 days postpartum. The carnitine level fell significantly to 35.2 + 1.26 nmoles/ml until the 40-50th day.The carnitine concentrations did not depend on the secreted volume of milk. In comparison, fresh and commercial pasteurized cow's milk contained 206.2 (range: 192-269) nmoles/ml and 160.0 (range: 158-200) nmoles/ml carnitine, respectively. In the sera of … Show more

“…In the present study the blood samples from the mothers were taken 3-4 days after delivery whereas in previous studies (8,(23)(24)(25) the samples have been taken at the time of delivery. This provides an explanation for our finding because serum carnitine levels of pregnant women are low (24,26) but increase during the 1st wk after delivery (18).…”

“…during the first weeks after delivery (17,18). Hence, because of possibly insufficient carnitine synthesis, solely breast-fed infants may develop reduced serum carnitine levels during the first months of life.…”

“…Die höchste Carnitinkonzentration liegt im Kolostrum vor. Danach erfolgt ein Rückgang, insbesondere in den ersten 2 -3 Wochen der Laktation, wie dies Untersuchungen bei Sauen (Kaiser 1997;Kerner et al 1984) und Frauen (Sandor et al 1982) sowie bei Stuten (Benamou und Harris 1993) zeigten.…”
