On a Ratio of Functions of Exponential Random Variables and Some Applications

Abstract: Consider L independent and identically distributed exponential random variables (r.vs) X1,X2,...,XL, and positive scalars b1,b2,...,bL. In this letter, we present the probability density function (pdf), cumulative distribution function and the Laplace transform of the pdf of the composite r.v Z = (X1 + X2 + ... + XL)2 /(b1*X1 + b2*X2 + ... + bL*XL). We show that the r.v Z appears in various communication systems such as 1) maximal ratio combining of signals received over multiple channels with mismatched noise… Show more

“…On the other hand, different distributions of ratio of products of RVs have been analysed by the previous works. For example, the performances of the maximal ratio combining (MRC) diversity reception and multi-carrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system affected by an interference were studied in [10] by using the statistics of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) exponential variates.…”

“…The N instantaneous SNR are exponential random variables however the M instantaneous SNRs don't have exponential distribution since they are defined as ratio of two exponential random variables [13]. Based on equation (7), finding closed form expression of γ * SC is not evident as we are dealing with two sets of random variables with different averages and different distributions.…”
