On a new species of Aplectana (Nematoda, Cosmocercidae) from Kulti, Burdwan, West Bengal, India

Abstract: During routine survey for amphibian nematodes from coalfield areas of West Bengal, India 7 male and 12 female nematodes were recovered from the rectum of one out of three Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider, 1899) examined for helminth infection from Kulti, Burdwan. On examination the recovered nematodes were found to belong to a new species of the genus Aplectana (Nematoda: Cosmocercidae) and the name Aplectana duttaphryni sp. nov. is proposed for them. This species is most similar to those species which po… Show more

“…Gupta (1959Gupta ( , 1960 reported H. tigerinus collected in Bangladesh as host for Seuratascaris numidica (= Amplicaecum ranae and Amplicaecum cacopi). It should be noted that Sou et al (2014) described Aplectana duttaphryni in D. melanostictus from Kulti region; Sou and Nandi (2015a) described Aplectana dubrajpuri in Hoploaatrachus tigerinus; and, Sou and Nandi (2015b) described Cosmocerca microhylae in Microhyla rubra, from the Birbhum district, West Bengal, India. This report of Seuratascaris numidica is the second record of gravid amphibian nematodes from Kulti Industrial region of West Bengal.…”

“…Sarkar and Manna (2002) reported larvae of Monhysterides sp. (a fish parasite) from cysts within the body cavity and musculature of D. melanostictus (= Bufo melanostictus); H. tigerinus (= Rana tigrina) and Euphlyctis hexadactylus (= Rana hexadactyla) from Belur, Liluah, Habra and Sonarpur; Sarkar and Manna (2004) described Rhabdias bulbicauda from the lungs of D. melanostictus (= Bufo melanostictus) from Belur and Habra; Sou et al (2014) described Aplectana duttaphryni from the intestine of D. melanostictus from Kulti; Sou and Nandi (2015a, b) described, first, Cosmocerca microhylae from Microhyla rubra and, secondly, Aplectana dubrajpuri from H. tigerinus, both from the Birbhum district, West Bengal. The purpose of this note is to report additional helminth infections from anurans of West Bengal, India, particularly the Kulti region.…”

“…So, the genus Meteterakis currently comprises 29 species, of which 20 species have been reported from the Oriental region. It should be noted that Sou et al (2014) described Aplectana duttaphryni Sou, Sow and Nandi, 2014 from the rectum of D. melanostictus from Kulti, Asansol coalfield area. Few years later, Sou and Bursey (2017) reported the presence of Seuratascaris numidica Seurat, 1917 in Hoplobatrachus tigerinus (Daudin, 1803) also from the same region.…”

“…In this survey, seven male and nine female nematode parasites were collected from two F. limnocharis from Dubrajpur region, Birbhum, West Bengal. The recovered nematodes were identified as Aplectana duttaphryni 5 . As per our best knowledge, this is the first scanning electron microscopic work of A. duttaphryni from South Asia as well as from India.…”

“…As per our best knowledge, this is the first scanning electron microscopic work of A. duttaphryni from South Asia as well as from India. Till now, five species of Aplectana from the Indian Subcontinent are A. macintoshii 6 , A. duttaphryni 5 , A. dubrajpuri 7 , A. hoplobatrachusia 8 and A. akhrami 9 in Pakistan 5,6,7,8,9,10 . Recently Sou and Banerjee 11, reported a new species, Aplectana sriniketanensis Sou and Banerjee, 2020 from West Bengal.…”
