AimTo assess the relative relevance of dispersal limitation and species sorting as drivers of spatial turnover between spider faunas of European territories.LocationContinental Europe.Time periodPresent.Major taxa studiedSpiders (Order Araneae).MethodsWe analysed how distance‐decay patterns differ between northern and southern Europe (broadly, territories covered vs. not covered by ice sheets during the last glacial maximum, respectively) in 15 spider families, using standardized distances to allow a direct comparison between parameters (i.e. slope and intercept) of climatic and spatial distance‐decay models. Thus, we assessed North–South differences in parameters of spatial and, independently, climatic distance‐decay models, and whether those differences are explained by family‐specific traits related to dispersal ability.ResultsClimatic and spatial distance‐decay patterns are very similar in northern Europe, where climatic and spatial distances are highly correlated. In contrast, slopes are steeper in spatial than in climatic distance‐decay curves in southern Europe, where climatic and spatial distances are decoupled. Moreover, family traits related to dispersal ability explained the North–South difference in spatial distance‐decay slopes, as well as the amount of nestedness‐resultant dissimilarity between southern and northern spider faunas.Main conclusionsOur results suggest that differences in beta diversity patterns between northern and southern Europe reflect the strength of dispersal limitation in spiders, which varies across families and leads to different degrees of disequilibrium with current climatic conditions depending on the taxon. Moreover, in the South of Europe, where spatial and climatic distances are uncorrelated, spatial distance‐decay models are steeper and have larger explanatory power than climatic distance‐decay models, which suggests that dispersal limitation is the main factor shaping current beta diversity patterns of European spiders at the continental scale.

An annotated list of 31 spider species of 12 families collected in Northeasten, Easten and Southern Ukraine is presented. Four speceis, Marinarozelotes manychensis (Ponomarev & Tsvetkov, 2006), Turkоzelotes kazachstanicus (Ponomarev et Tsvetkov, 2006), Zelotes atrocaeruleus (Simon, 1878), and Z. puritanus Chamberlin, 1922, are recorded for the first time from Ukraine. For Micaria coarctata (Lucas, 1846), this is the first record from the East European Plain. Nine species were recorded for the first time from Left-Bank Ukraine. To date, 1081 spider species are known from Ukraine and 757 species from Left-Bank Ukraine. Bsed on recent data, the northern boundaries of the geographic ranges of Drassyllus crimeaensis Kovblyuk, 2003 and Bassanioides caperatus (Simon, 1875) run along the northern coast of the Sea of Azov. For Marinarozelotes manychensis and Turkоzelotes kazachstanicus the northwestern coast of the Sea of Azov is the westernmost known limits of their distiribution. The range of Heriaeus horridus Tyschchenko, 1965 is delimited in the west by the right bank of the Dnieper estuary. Thirteen species are illlustrted.

A new genus and two poorly known species of the Dictynidae from Central Asia are (re)described. Dictyna uzbekistanica Charitonov, 1946, hitherto known from the holotype female from Uzbekistan, is redescribed and illustrated on the basis of the holotype and new material from Iran; it is transferred to a newly erected monotypic genus Kharitonovia gen.n. The widespread Central Asian "Nigma" laeta (Spassky, 1952) known from Tajikistan, western Azerbaijan and Iran is redescribed and illustrated on the basis of newly collected material from Iran. Dictyna uzbekistanica vittata Charitonov, 1946 syn.n. is synonymized with K. uzbekistanica (Charitonov, 1946). Four species of the genus Nigma Lehtinen, 1967 are shown to be treated as insertae sedis: "Nigma" conducens (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1876) (Egypt), "Nigma" laeta (Spassky, 1952) (Central Asia), "Nigma" linsdalei (Chamberlin et Gertsch, 1958) (California), and "Nigma" longipes (Berland, 1914) (Kenya). РЕЗЮМЕ. Новый род и два малоизвестных вида (пере)описаны из Центральной Азии. Dictyna uzbekistanica Charitonov, 1946, известная ранее только по голотипу-самке из Узбекистана, переописана и проиллюстрирована по голотипу и новым материалам из Ирана. Она перемещена в новь установленный монотипический род Kharitonovia gen.n. Широко распространенная центральноазиатская "Nigma" laeta (Spassky, 1952), известная из Таджикистана, Азербайджана и Ирана переописана и проиллюстрирована по новым материалам из Ирана.
