Resynthesized (RS) Brassica napus can be used to increase the genetic diversity of this important crop plant and to develop the heterotic gene pool required for successful hybrid breeding programmes. The level of heterosis in F 1 hybrids depends on the individual performance of the parents and on the degree of genetic difference between them. However, RS forms obtained from crosses of B . rapa ssp. with B . oleracea ssp. possess many undesirable agronomic traits, such as low quality of seeds, low yield and seed oil content, high erucic acid level in the oil and high glucosinolate content in seed meal. Therefore, RS oilseed rape needs to be improved by crossing with natural double-low oilseed rape, leading to selected double-low quality semi-RS lines that can be used for breeding. In this study, we evaluated the seed yield potential of F 1 hybrids derived from crosses between Ogura cytoplasmic male-sterility (CMS) lines and doubled haploid (DH) semi-RS lines with restorer gene in three locations in Poland. The genotype by environment interaction (GE interaction) and general combining ability (GCA) of the restorer and CMS line effects, as well as the effects of heterosis, were also assessed. The results of the study provide the first insights into the use of semi-RS lines as components for the development of new hybrid cultivars. Even the introduction of 50% of the RS oilseed rape genotype to natural restorer lines resulted in a marked heterosis effect, with seed yield ranging from 4.56% to 90.17% more than that of the better parent. The yield of the best hybrid amounted to 108.6% of the seed yield of the open-pollinated cultivar Monolit and 94.4% of that of the hybrid cultivar Arsenal. The best DH semi-RS line S1, which had a significantly positive GCA for seed yield, can be recommended as a possible parent for inclusion in breeding programmes aimed at developing new hybrid cultivars.

Stability Analysis of Agronomic Traits in Potato Cultivars of Different Origin

Potato (Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum) cultivars are expected to express a stable level for traits important for growers and consumers. To investigate how this expectation was met by a set of 21 cultivars bred in Hungary, Poland and Spain, 2-year field experiments were carried out in these countries for the evaluation of tuber yield, starch content and yield, and occurrence of secondary growth of tubers. Stability in an agronomic sense was evaluated by the analysis of genotype by environment interaction (GE) using the Scheffé-Caliński mixed model. Unstable trait expression was indicated by the statistically significant share of GE in the variability contributed by a specific cultivar. This instability could lead to either complete or partial unpredictability. Stable trait expression was observed for 6-11 cultivars, depending on the trait. A significant genetic factor, which indicates broad adaptation, was rarely found. Stable expression of tuber yield occurred together with stable or predictable expression of both starch content and yield. Unstable expressions of tuber and starch yield were also associated. The stability or instability of secondary growth was not associated with stability or instability of the other measured traits. Analysis of GE interaction was useful for identifying stable or unstable responses and revealed the presence of incomplete stability or partial unpredictability as intermediate types of reaction.Resumen Se esperaría que las variedades de papa (Solanum tuberosum spp. tuberosum) expresen un nivel estable de caracteres importantes para productores y consumidores. Para investigar como esta expectativa pudiera darse en un juego de 21 variedades de Hungría, Polonia y España, se llevaron a cabo experimentos de campo durante dos años en estos países para la evaluación de rendimiento de tubérculo, rendimiento y contenido de almidón, y la presencia de crecimiento secundario de tubérculos. Se evaluó la estabilidad, en un sentido agronómico, mediante el análisis de la interacción genotipo-medio ambiente (GE), usando el modelo de la mezcla Scheffé-Caliński. La expresión de un carácter inestable se indicó por la significancia estadística de GE en la variabilidad proporcionada por una variedad específica. Esta inestabilidad podría conducir ya fuera para imprevisibilidad completa o parcial. La expresión de un carácter estable se observó en 6-11 variedades, dependiendo del carácter. Raramente se encontró un factor genético significativo que indicara amplia adaptación. La expresión estable de rendimiento de tubérculo se presentó junto con la expresión estable o predecible tanto con el contenido como con el rendimiento de almidón. También se asociaron expresiones inestables de rendimiento de tubérculo y almidón. La estabilidad o inestabilidad de crecimiento secundario no se asoció con estabilidad o inestabilidad de los otros caracteres medidos. Field trials conducted in multiple years across several locations play an essential role in plant breeding and variety testing. Usually, the analysis of the series of field trials is performed using a two-stage approach, where each combination of year and site is treated as environment. In variety testing based on the results from the analysis, the best varieties are recommended for cultivation. Under a Bayesian approach, the variety recommendation process can be treated as a formal decision theoretic problem. In the present study, we describe Bayesian counterparts of two stability measures and compare the varieties in terms of the posterior expected utility. Using the described methodology, we identify the most stable and highest tuber yielding varieties in the Polish potato series of field trials conducted from 2016 to 2018. It is shown that variety Arielle was the highest yielding, the third most stable variety and was the second best variety in terms of the posterior expected utility. In the present work, application of the Bayesian approach allowed us to incorporate the prior knowledge about the tested varieties and offered a possibility of treating the variety recommendation process as a formal decision process.
