On a Hybrid Beamforming/Space-Time Coding Scheme

Abstract: Abstract-A multiple transmit antenna system based on hybrid beamforming and space-time coding technologies is examined. The reduction factor of the required transmitted energy achievable by the use of hybrid scheme is quantified for any given outage capacity. We show that although a sole space-time coding configuration is superior asymptotically (i.e., for extremely low outage requirements), a hybrid beamforming/space-time coding configuration can be a more effective solution for modest outage requirements. It… Show more

“…Space-time codes were studied in combination with beamforming at the receiver for interference rejection in [9]. Alternatively, depending on propagation conditions, a number of transmit beams can be formed, in combination with an appropriately sized space-time code [10][11][12]. Often the proposed schemes use environmentoriented adaptive beamforming, forming a directive beam pattern toward the impinging waves' directions-of-arrival.…”

“…Various hybrid MIMO techniques scheme have been proposed in the past to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. Most of them focus on combining beamforming with diversity techniques [7][8][9][10]. However, this combined technique can only enable a system to achieve both diversity and beamforming gains.…”
