“…Nevertheless, using adapted conditions for the kINPen or plasma devices generating sufficient amount of atomic oxygen also in open air (e.g. COST-jet) would allow the interaction of atomic oxygen with targets in the bulk liquid as was shown by Benedikt et al 88 or Wende et al 89 . Another plasma source also operated with helium as feed gas, similar to the COST-jet, operated in controlled environment produced mainly atomic oxygen under the investigated conditions reported by Elg et al 90 .…”

“…Using admixtures of molecular gases, more than 50% of tyrosine was converted into hydroxytyrosine. Target water ionization, homolysis, or photolysis is promoted by excited states of Ar 2 or N 2 (excimers), as well as from radical reactions [ 36 , 90 ]. The direct reaction with those species (or for excimers, with their radiation) leads to the predominant formation in water of ˙OH and ˙H [ 91 , 92 , 93 ], which would react directly with tyrosine to form hydroxytyrosine.…”

“…The peak areas of each observed derivative were normalized on the peak area of the control (untreated tyrosine), giving a relative estimate of the conversion. For treatments involving isotopes, the measurement data were corrected according to [ 36 ], taking into account the natural distribution of isotopes and the purity grade.…”

“…DBDs are known to generate a wide range of reactive species, such as ozone or nitric oxide 24 – 26 , depending on the exact conditions 27 , 28 . A standardized DBD was used in this work, which was already extensively characterised by us in previous studies regarding its plasma parameters, such as the electron density or the gas temperature, and the generated concentration of reactive chemical species 29 , 30 .…”
