The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ahr) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that mediates the toxicity of halogenated and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in vertebrates. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) has recently emerged as a model organism in environmental toxicology studies, and increased knowledge of Ahr-mediated responses to xenobiotics is imperative. Genome mining and phylogenetic analyses revealed two Ahr-encoding genes in the Atlantic cod genome, gmahr1a and gmahr2a. In vitro binding assays showed that both gmAhr proteins bind to TCDD, but stronger binding to gmAhr1a was observed. Transactivation studies with a reporter gene assay revealed that gmAhr1a is one order of magnitude more sensitive to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) than gmAhr2a, but the maximal response of the receptors were similar. Other well-known Ahr agonists, such as β-naphthoflavone (BNF), 3,3′,4,4′,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB126) and 6formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ), also activated the gmAhr proteins, but gmAhr1a was in general the more sensitive receptor and produced the highest efficacies. Induction of cyp1a in exposed precision-cut cod liver slices confirmed the activation of the Ahr signaling pathway ex vivo. In conclusion, the differences in transcriptional activation by gmAhrs with various agonists, the distinct binding properties with TCDD and BNF, and the distinct tissue-specific expression profiles, indicate different functional specializations of the Atlantic cod Ahrs.

PurposeThe aim of this study is to investigate why many immigrants end up in uncertain employment.Design/methodology/approachThe paper describes a qualitative case study of three nursing homes in Oslo (Norway), which investigates immigrant employment and recruitment-related practices. Practice theory is used as the theoretical and methodological framework. The study takes an ethnographic approach and combines participant observation, semi-structured shadowing, qualitative interviews and document review.FindingsThe recruitment practice, as it is accomplished, is different from the practice that is prescribed in the formal recruitment policy. The configuration of the recruitment-related practices locks in the recruitment practice and reproduces the social order. The net effect of the recruitment-related practices is that immigrant employees remain in uncertain employment.Research limitations/implicationsA practice-theoretical approach, analyzing organizational practices as they are accomplished in space and time and not as isolated activities defined by their purpose, provides a richer understanding of the complexity and connectedness of organizational practices. Combining practice theory and institutional perspectives, the paper demonstrates how normative and regulative mediators order and align related practices. The study demonstrates the importance of examining the configuration of practices to understand how the net effect of related practices affects those who dwell in them, in this case immigrants pursuing secure and stable employment.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the field of diversity management by using practice theory to explain why measures for enhancing immigrant employment may not have the intended effect because they are interwoven in a nexus of practices with conflicting interests that (un)intentionally undermine the measures.

The labour market in many European countries is changing and for many young people it leads to challenges in gaining a lasting connection to working life.School dropout and deficiencies in their education lead to challenges for many young people on the road to adulthood. Students who find it difficult to complete a vocational education in upper secondary school, now have the opportunity to be training candidates in a practically oriented education with a limited number of competence goals.Work inclusion means that the individual's ability to work will be examined in various ways to increase the possibility of permanent work. However, work inclusion is a complex phenomenon, where several actors may be involved and where the goals and progress plan will vary. This is costly and stressful for both the individual and the society. Working life is a central learning arena within upper secondary education, and there will be a need to facilitate participation in this arena also for students with a need for adapted education.
