Omics approaches to understanding the efficacy and safety of disease-modifying treatments in multiple sclerosis

Abstract: From the perspective of precision medicine, the challenge for the future is to improve the accuracy of diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of therapeutic responses through the identification of biomarkers. In this framework, the omics sciences (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) and their combined use represent innovative approaches for the exploration of the complexity and heterogeneity of multiple sclerosis (MS). This review examines the evidence currently available on the application … Show more

“…The novel approach proposes integrative analytical methods that combine clinical characteristics, MRI findings and information from different omics approaches. The omics sciences include genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics and their joined use are promising direction for future research on potential biomarkers for diagnosis, prediction of disability and disease progression, as well as follow up the efficacy and safety of administered IMT in pwMS (Lorena et al, 2023).…”

“…For instance, tryptophan has been found increased in polleninduced AR and food allergy [19,178,179] and associated with disease severity in MS [180,181]. Histidine reduction, observed in asthma [182] and IBD [183], correlates with chronic inflammation and disease severity.…”

“…10 Many of these models use "systems biology" approaches (Omics data) to predict various disease markers and outcomes. 11 Recent imaging research into predictive modeling for MS includes applications in cognitive decline 12 and deep learning approaches to disease progression. 13 Radiomics is a field of research in which higher-order image features such as texture or intensity distribution are investigated (often using AI and machine learning models to glean deeper information from radiologic images).…”
