“…29 Several studies have found similar quality of life and symptom severity scores for patients with ERD and NERD. 4,24,30,31 Consistent with this, the symptom presentation for patients with NERD was not significantly different to that for patients with ERD in this study. The severity of reflux symptoms in patients with NERD indicates that these patients have significant illness and the same need for effective treatment as patients with ERD or BE.…”

“…It is well recognized that hiatal hernia is present in most patients with BE, and a lower frequency of hernia in patients with NERD has been reported. 4,24,25 In a large case control study, the presence and size of hernia was strongly associated with risk of developing high grade dysplasia or adenocarcinoma in patients with BE. 26 Hiatal hernia has also be identified as an important factor for the development of ERD in patients with NERD.…”

“…In patients with heartburn (NERD), PPI administration resolved symptoms only in 61% of the patients, which is approximately 20 to 30% lower effectiveness than that of patients with erosive esophagitis. 17,18 Fourty percent of the patients diagnosed with GERD fail to respond to once daily PPI regimen and majority of these patients belong to the NERD group and functional heartburn. In this situation, experts generally recommend to switch over to twice daily dosing regimen, however, before escalating the dose of PPI, it is important to analysis and consider other potential causes for nonresponsiveness like, poor compliance, improper dosing schedules, residual reflux reduced bioavailability.…”
