Omentin-A Novel Adipokine in Respiratory Diseases

Abstract: Adipokines, secreted by the adipose tissue, are extensively involved in the regulation and maintenance of various physiological and pathological processes, including insulin sensitivity, energy expenditure, glucose and lipid metabolism, inflammatory activity, neuroendocrine activity, immunity, cancer, homeostasis, angiogenesis, cardiovascular function, breeding and bone metabolism, and all functions of the endocrine-reproductive system axis. Omentin is a recently identified adipokine, which has become a resear… Show more

“…This adipokine is involved in lipid metabolism (through inhibiting oxLDL) and proper synthesis of nitric oxide through the inhibition of TNF-alpha-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression, with further activation of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)/NO pathway [ 54 ]. Moreover, omentin is able to promote the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype of macrophages during the differentiation of monocytes into macrophages, thus reducing the production of pro-inflammatory factors [ 16 , 19 ]. In this context, the increased ratios of adiponectin/leptin and omentin/leptin observed in our vegetarians may be related to a better metabolic profile in children who consume a well-planned vegetarian diet.…”

“…Among these forms, high-molecular weight multimers (HMW) appear to have the highest bioactivity, and the HMW/total adiponectin ratio is a better determinant of metabolic status than total adiponectin alone [ 13 , 14 ]. Omentin, secreted by the stroma cells of adipose tissue, has anti-inflammatory properties via the activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthesis, blood pressure regulation, and by directly influencing blood vessel relaxation [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Also, vaspin, a member of the serine protease inhibitor family, plays an important role of protecting against inflammation and atherosclerosis [ 20 ].…”

“…Since 1980 age-standardised diabetes mellitus (DM) prevalence has increased by 110% in men and by 58% in women, reaching, respectively, 9% and 7.9% global prevalence in 2014 1. Such an alarmingly high increasing rate, coupled with population growth and ageing, has led to a near quadrupling of the number of adults with diabetes worldwide who are now estimated to be 422 million1 and projected to rise to 629 million by 2045 2. The highest DM burden is concentrated in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).…”

“…For instance, transforming growth factor-β1 and microRNA gene variations have been shown to be associated with CAD in Chinese, Caucasian [9], and Indian cohorts, respectively [10,11,12,13]. Omentin protein (also called intelectin) is a novel adipocytokine secreted by visceral adipose tissues (e.g., retroperitoneal and epicardial fat), intestinal Paneth cells and endothelial cells [14]. It is composed of 313 amino acid residues (35 kDa) and circulates in the human bloodstream.…”

“…It is composed of 313 amino acid residues (35 kDa) and circulates in the human bloodstream. There are two isoforms of omentin with amino acid sequence similarity about 83% [14]. Omentin1 is the major isoform in blood and studied more than omentin 2 [14].…”
