MongoDB-Based Repository Design for IoT-Generated RFID/Sensor Big Data

IoT-generated data are characterized by its continuous generation, large amount, and unstructured format. Existing relational database technologies are inadequate to handle such IoT-generated data due to the limited processing speed and the significant storage-expansion cost. Thus, big data processing technologies, which are normally based on distributed file systems, distributed database management, and parallel processing technologies, have arisen as a core technology to implement IoTgenerated data repositories. In this study, we propose a sensorintegrated RFID data repository-implementation model using MongoDB, the most popular big data-savvy document-oriented database system now. Firstly, we devise a data repository schema that can effectively integrate and store the heterogeneous IoT data sources such as RFID, sensor, and GPS, by extending the event data types in Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) standard, a de facto standard for the information exchange services for RFID-based traceability. Secondly, we propose an effective shard key to maximize query speed and uniform data distribution over data servers. Lastly, through a series of experiments measuring query speed and the level of data distribution, we show that the proposed design strategy, which is based on horizontal data partitioning and a compound shard key, is effective and efficient for the IoT-generated RFID/sensor big data.

Abstract-Today, Internet of Things (IoT) is an emergent concept in which billions of devices are connected to Internet capable of producing and exchanging data. One of the most used technologies in this area regards to the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). It can produce large amount of data from many things like objects, persons and assets. Thus, it is needed middlewares which must support processing in large scales. However, the state-of-the-art does not present satisfactory solutions in which this kind of middlewares are capable of adapt themselves according to processing demands. Embora existam benefícios para sistemas IoT, a elasticidade em nuvem é mais largamente explorada em arquiteturas cliente-servidor, como vídeo sob-demanda, lojas online, aplicações BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) [8], governança eletrônica e Web Services [9]. Apesar de diversos estudos na direção de criar middlewares RFID compatíveis com o padrão EPCglobal, ainda há uma lacuna no que diz respeito à elasticidade de recursos para tais sistemas. Neste contexto, esse artigo propõe um modelo de elasticidade proativa para middlewares RFID padrão EPCglobal em Nuvem. Foi desenvolvido um gerenciador chamado Proliot que utiliza modelos de séries temporais para prever a carga de utilização dos recursos em que o middleware está sendo executado. É utilizada a elasticidade proativa como forma de mitigar o tempo de preparação e inicialização de um novo recurso computacional. Ao prever que o sistema estará sobrecarregado daqui alguns minutos, é possível já começar a alocação de uma nova máquina virtual. Dessa forma quando o sistema estiver de fato sobrecarregado o novo recurso já estará pronto para utilização. Os experimentos realizados demostraram que Proliot pode obter resultados muito semelhantes e em alguns casos até melhor em comparação com um sistema que utiliza a elasticidade reativa.Este artigo está organizado em 8 seções. A seção II apresenta uma análise dos trabalhos relacionados com o tema proposto nesse artigo. Em seguida, o modelo Proliot é apresentado em detalhes na seção III. A seção IV é destinada para descrição da implementação do protótipo desenvolvido como prova de conceito da arquitetura proposta. Statistics show that a bathroom is one of the most hazardous places especially for older people. Older people typically have greater difficulties with mobility and balance, making them more vulnerable to fall and slip injuries in a bathroom and causing serious health issues related to short and long-term well-being. Various components in a bathroom including shower, tub, floor, and toilet have been re-designed, and independently upgraded their ergonomics and safety aspects; however, the number of bathroom injuries remains consistently high in general. Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a new concept applicable to almost everywhere and man-made objects. Wireless sensors detect abnormalities and send data through the network. A large amount of data can be collected from multiple IoT systems and it can be utilized for a big data analysis. The big data may reveal a hidden positive outcome beyond the initially intended purposes. A few commercial IoT applications such as wearable health monitoring and intelligent transportation systems are available. Nevertheless, An IoT application for a bathroom is not currently known. Unlike other applications, bathrooms have some unique aspects such as privacy and wet environment. This paper presents a holistic conceptual approach of an Internet-of-Things (IoT) system development and implementation to enhance bathroom safety. The concept focuses on the application in a large nursing care facility as a pilot testing bed. Authors propose 1) sensor selection and application, 2) integration of a wireless sensor local network system, 3) design concept for IoT implementation, and 4) a big data analysis system model in this paper.
