Olfactory responses of two species of grasshoppers to plant odours

Abstract: Electroantennogram (EAG) responses were recorded from two species of oedipodine grasshoppers, Oedaleus decorus asiaticus L. (graminivorous) and Angaracris barabensis Pall. (forbivorous), to volatiles emitted by chopped leaves of ten plant species. Male O. d. asiaticus showed much stronger EAG responses than conspecific females and both sexes of A. barabensis. Sexual differences in EAG responses correspond to different numbers of antennal sensilla of both sexes and to certain behavioural and morphological facto… Show more

“…A gut transcriptome analysis revealed Stipa krylovii has a higher use efficiency by O. asiaticus relative to other common grasses, including Leymus chinensis, which is often co-dominant with Stipa in this species' range (Huang et al, 2017b). Accordingly, O. asiaticus has a greater olfactory response to plants in the Poaceae family relative to forb feeders (Chen and Kang, 2000). Several additional studies have investigated the nutritional ecology of this species.…”

“…Furthermore, it is unlikely that grasshoppers detected more preferable plant traits in the watered plots at any great distance. Previous work has found that rangeland grasshoppers move in relation to the prevailing wind or randomly (Narisu et al ) and are retained by areas with preferable host plants that are encountered through close range olfactory cues or tactile contact and tasting (Mulkern et al , Blust and Hopkins , White and Chapman , Szentesi et al , Chen and Kang , Kang and Hopkins ).…”

“…Odour delivery system The odour delivery system was similar to that described by Chen & Kang (2000). A constant flow (1.0 L/min) of charcoalā€filtered and humidified compressed air was passed over the antenna through a disposable nozzle positioned 1 cm from the antenna.…”
