“…The first experiment was conducted using MK801, a non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl D-aspartate glutamate receptors (NMDAR). This drug has been widely used as anamnesic agent in several memory tasks in different species (Morris et al 1986;Tan et al 1989;Miserendino et al 1990;Lin and Glanzman 1994;Rickard et al 1994;Weldon et al 1997;Gutiérrez et al 1999;Roberts and Glanzman 2003;Si et al 2004;Xia et al 2005;Wu et al 2007;Kano et al 2008;Müssig et al 2010;Rosenegger and Lukowiak 2010;Amano and Maruyama 2011). Moreover, MK801 caused amnesic effects in consolidation (Troncoso and Maldonado 2002), reconsolidation and extinction (Pérez-Cuesta and Maldonado 2009) in Chasmagnathus, consistent with the presence of NMDAR in the crab CNS (Hepp et al 2013).…”

“…Systemic injections of MK-801 have impaired olfactory-water reward discrimination learning and its reversal (Griesbach et al 1998), and olfactory-tactile preference learning in neonatal rats (Weldon et al, 1997). In addition, central administration of the competitive NR antagonist APV has identified critical sites for olfactory associations in different paradigms.…”

“…The rats in the first group (MK-801 group, n = 8) received a MK-801 injection (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA; 100 μg in 1ml/kg ip) while rats in the second group (vehicle group, n = 8) received a vehicle injection (0.15 M NaCl, 1 ml/kg ip). The dose of MK-801 was selected based on efficacy as an NR antagonist in other learning paradigms, without inducing noticeable motoric side effects (Griesbach et al, 1998;Stuchlik et al, 2004;Weldon et al, 1997). Thirty minutes after the injections, rats were given 2-h access to either the CS+/F or CS−/S solution in a one-bottle conditioning session.…”

“…Early olfactory associative learning involves N ‐methyl‐ d ‐aspartate (NMDA)‐receptor‐dependent processes (Lincoln et al 1988; Weldon et al 1997) and is mediated by cAMP response element‐binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation (Cui et al 2007; McLean et al 1999; Raineki et al 2009; Yuan et al 2003). In adults, NMDA receptors mediate olfactory learning at multiple levels in diverse species, including Drosophila (Hudson & Distel 1986), honeybees (Si et al 2004), rats (Tronel & Sara 2003) and mice (Brennan 1994).…”
