Older adults talk technology: Technology usage and attitudes

Abstract: Older adults (n = 113) participated in focus groups discussing their use of and attitudes about technology in the context of their home, work, and healthcare. Participants reported using a wide variety of technology items, particularly in their homes. Positive attitudes (i.e., likes) outnumbered negative attitudes (i.e., dislikes), suggesting that older adults perceive the benefits of technology use to outweigh the costs of such use. Positive attitudes were most frequently related to how the technology support… Show more

“…Table 1). In general, the use of IT has much to offer to senior citizens in terms of increasing their quality of life (Czaja & Lee, 2007;Mitzner et al, 2010). Czaja & Lee (2007) provide several examples that can be realised through Internet or IT usage, including reducing social isolation, IT-supported communication with friends and family and active participation in an increasingly computerised healthcare system.…”

“…However, research in this area still lacks a comprehensive explanation of why the elderly are more reluctant to accept (information) technologies (Chen & Chan, 2011). In this respect, beliefs or traits (as included in UTAUT and MATH) may have great potential explanatory power (Porter & Donthu, 2006;Mitzner et al, 2010). One example would be the self-efficacy that comes with prior technology usage (Burnett et al, 2011).…”

“…In the case of entities, we can face an actual problem of a digital divide stemming from the limitations in both material and competence access to a computer, the Internet and other modern technologies, but it also might be a conscious decision on the entity's part, depending on their needs and approach to technology (Mitzner et al, 2010;Selwyn, 2006) or their education and wealth (Goldfarb, Prince, 2008). When it comes to global-scale differences between the countries, there are far more factors to be named and among them are i.e.…”
