Simone Beta R 150 voyage de l'Anthologie de Planude, mais il n'est pas possible d'en faire autant avec l'Anthologie Palatine. La première, c'est-à-dire la copie originelle transcrite, signée et datée par Maxime Planude, arrivée en Italie avec l'humaniste sicilien Giovanni Aurispa, fut achetée après la mort de ce dernier par Bessarion, fut copiée plusieurs fois et devint, avec ses nombreuses copies, la source de la première édition supervisée par Lascaris et imprimée par Lorenzo de Alopa le 11 août 1494 3. Pour la deuxième, nous pouvons avancer seulement des hypothèses-et jusqu'à présent la plus convaincante est celle avancée par Alan Cameron, selon laquelle le livre fut donné par Marcus Musurus, le précieux collaborateur de Aldo Manuzio, à Érasme de Rotterdam, qui l'emmena avec lui en Angleterre pour le remettre à son tour à son ami homas More ; ce dernier le laissa en héritage à son beau-ils, le médecin John Clement. Clement, catholique comme son beau-père, fut contraint de quitter Londres pour échapper aux persécutions qui bouleversaient l'Europe et de se déplacer à Louvain avec ses livres ; d'ici, le livre parvint, on ignore comment, à la Bibliothèque palatine de Heidelberg, où il prit le nom qui a été ensuite donné au recueil des épigrammes qu'il contient 4. Les autres péripéties du manuscrit (de Heidelberg à Rome, de Rome à Paris, de Paris à Heidelberg) sont suisamment connues pour ne pas les raconter 5. J'ai choisi de parler de ces collections épigrammatiques car les épigrammes (ou mieux, une catégorie tout à fait singulière d'épigrammes : les énigmes) sont le sujet de cet article. Il y a dans l'Anthologie Palatine un livre entier, le quatorzième, qui est constitué par des problèmes arithmétiques, des oracles et, justement, des énigmes. Entre les cent cinquante petits poèmes qui forment ce livre assez discuté, car les philologues n'ont pas encore décidé s'il faisait partie ou non de l'architecture originale du recueil envisagé par son auteur, le protopape Constantine Céphalas, il y a une cinquantaine d'énigmes, qui deviendront ensuite un genre poétique apprécié par les écrivains byzantins 6.
