The purpose of this study is to examine teachers' opinions on the causes and effects of gossip and rumor in schools. In this study, the mixed research method, in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together, and the descriptive sequential design included in the mixed method were used. The sample of the quantitative part of the study consisted of 7 public schools located in Esenyurt district of Istanbul in the first semester of the 2018-2019 academic year and selected by simple random sampling method and 301 teachers working in these schools. The working group of the qualitative part consisted of 30 teachers working in state schools in the same province and district. The "Gossip and Rumor Attitude Scale" was used to collect the quantitative data of the study, and the qualitative data were collected with semi-structured interview questions. As a result of the analysis of the quantitative data, no significant difference was found in the causes and effects of gossip according to the variables of gender, marital status, education level and age. However, significant and statistical differences were found according to the variables of income, total time worked at school, and total time worked in the profession. In the qualitative findings of the study, the participants stated that teachers who were exposed to gossip had to cope with deep sadness and resentment and related psychological problems. In addition, the participants highlighted jealousy and boredom among the causes of gossip at schools.
