Communication is a fundamental human right, so everyone who has a story to tell should be able to do so. However, the gatekeeping processes involved in the traditional model of publishing do not make it possible for every voice or story to end up as a book in the hands of readers. This practice is firmly rooted in the “survival of fittest” syndrome which ensures that only manuscripts that assures profits for publishers make it to the book market. As a reaction, marginalized authors at the receiving end of this practice are leveraging on digital technologies to by-pass publishers and connect directly with readers, leading to an increasing rise in self-publishing. While past studies have captured the role of digital technologies in reducing the intermediating role of book publishers between authors and readers, how this intermediation sets the pace for and enhances self-publishing practice in a developing African country like Nigeria has received scant attention. Based on the argument that democratized book publishing promotes literary diversity, this study reviews trends in self-publishing in Nigeria. Analysis reveals that self-publishing has become firmly established as a digital-led publishing model in the country. Recommendations are offered on standardizing self-publishing in the emerging Nigerian digital economy, including the relevance of strategic digital and social media marketing.

Depuis le début du troisième millénaire, l’essor de la « nouvelle littérature nigériane » a inspiré de nombreux numéros spéciaux, y compris dans des revues réputées comme English in Africa et Research in African Literatures , et a contribué à la célébrité d’auteurs tels qu’Adichie, Abani, Habila et Adebayo érigés au rang de représentants de cette nouvelle génération. Dans le même temps, les chercheurs se sont relativement peu intéressés aux continuités et aux réseaux de production qui permettent de relier cette nouvelle littérature nigériane mondialement reconnue aux histoires plus anciennes de l’écriture militante et de la culture de l’imprimé au Nigéria. Dans cet essai, je tente d’établir certains de ces liens, en explorant les relations entre les écologies littéraires dites « locales » et leurs équivalents mondiaux mieux connus. Je me concentre dans un dernier temps sur une étude de cas : le magazine Farafina , lancé en tant que publication numérique en 2004 et qui a publié seize numéros imprimés de 2005 à 2009. Mon objectif est ici double. Il s’agit d’une part de repérer les réseaux d’influences et de pratiques qui, de façon multilatérale, opèrent à travers ces échelles imbriquées de production littéraire, et ce, d’une manière qui dépasse le modèle centre-périphérie des littératures mondiales sans pourtant y échapper complètement. D’autre part, il s’agit d’éclairer les réseaux, arcs et axes formels et esthétiques qui s’en dégagent.
