OGLE-2014-BLG-0289: Precise Characterization of a Quintuple-peak Gravitational Microlensing Event

Abstract: We present the analysis of the binary-microlensing event OGLE-2014-BLG-0289. The event light curve exhibits five very unusual peaks, four of which were produced by caustic crossings and the other by a cusp approach. It is found that the quintuple-peak features of the light curve provide tight constraints on the source trajectory, enabling us to precisely and accurately measure the microlensing parallax E p . Furthermore, the three resolved caustics allow us to measure the angular Einstein radius E q . From the… Show more

“…For planetary events (defined for this purpose to be q < 0.05), we exclude stellar remnants from the Galactic models. For events with degeneracies for which the authors advocate strongly for one particular solution for θ E and π E based either on χ 2 fitness or on physical grounds (OB140289: Udalski et al 2018;OB141050: Zhu et al 2015;OB161045: Shin et al 2018;OB161190: Ryu et al 2018), we retain the favoured solutions only. Events with degeneracies yielding physical properties consistent within 1σ are assigned physical properties corresponding to the solution with the lowest χ 2 for this comparison (OB140124: Udalski et al 2015b;Beaulieu et al 2018;OB141050: Zhu et al 2015;OB150479: Han et al 2016;OB161195: Shvartzvald et al 2017).…”

“…However, the extension of the trajectory crosses the upper triangular caustic, resulting in a light curve that differs greatly from the observed one. The importance of well-covered multiple peaks in determining E p was first pointed out by An & Gould (2001) and a good example was presented by Udalski et al (2018) for the quintuple-peak lensing event OGLE-2014-BLG-0289.…”
