RESUMEN:El uso de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) y otras plataformas para el tratamiento de la información espacial está generando una mejoría en las habilidades cartográficas del alumnado y, en general, en la Competencia digital. Dentro de la amplia oferta existente destacan Google Earth, Géoportail o las Infraestructuras de Datos Espaciales (IDEs). En los últi-mos años, han ganado terreno estas últimas por las ventajas que ofrecen a la Administración, así como por sus posibilidades didácticas al ayudar al alumno a la comprensión del espacio y, en general, de las relaciones espaciales a todos los niveles y escalas de trabajo. En este artículo se plantea una justificación teórica de la aplicación de la plataforma IDERioja y se presenta una propuesta de actividades en las aulas de Primaria y Secundaria.

Efficient environment monitoring has become a major concern for society to guarantee sustainable development. For instance, forest fire detection and analysis is important to provide early warning systems and identify impact. In this environmental context, availability of up-to-date information is very important for reducing damages caused. Environmental applications are deployed on top of Geospatial Information Infrastructures (GIIs) to manage information pertaining to our environment. Such infrastructures are traditionally top-down infrastructures that do not consider user participation. This provokes a bottleneck in content publication and therefore a lack of content availability. On the contrary mainstream IT systems and in particular the emerging Web 2.0 Services allow active user participation that is becoming a massive source of dynamic geospatial resources. In this paper, we present a web service, that implements a standard interface, offers a unique entry point for spatial data discovery, both in GII services and web 2.0 services. We introduce a prototype as proof of concept in a forest fire scenario, where we illustrate how to leverage scientific data and web 2.0 content.

Lifting the Information Barriers to Address Sustainability Challenges with Data from Physical Geography and Earth Observation

Sustainability challenges demand solutions, and the pace of technological and scientific advances in physical geography and Earth observation have great potential to provide the information needed to address these challenges. This paper highlights five online tools and initiatives that are lifting barriers to address these challenges. The enviroGRIDS project in the Black Sea catchment demonstrates how the use of spatial data infrastructures can facilitate data sharing. Google Earth Engine is providing solutions to challenges of processing big data into usable information. Additionally, application programming interfaces allow outsiders to elaborate and iterate on programs to explore novel uses of data and models, as seen in the Berkeley Ecoinformatics Engine. Finally, collaborative mapping tools, such as Seasketch/MarineMap and the InVEST software suite, allow engagement within and between groups of experts and stakeholders for the development, deployment, and long-term impact of a project. Merging these different experiences can set a new standard for online information tools supporting sustainable development from evidence brought by physical geography combined with socioeconomic conditions.
