Offspring of women with nonorganic psychosis: mother‐infant interaction at three days of age

Abstract: Mother-infant interaction during a feeding was studied at about 3 days of age in 51 index mother-infant pairs in which the mother had a history of nonorganic psychosis and in 73 demographically similar control pairs. Interaction was significantly more negative and deviant in index than control cases, index mothers establishing a significantly more negative emotional climate and less harmony in feeding, evidencing more tension and uncertainty, and showing less social contact toward the infant. Index infants sho… Show more

“…Schizophrenic mothers, in general, show less positive emotional responses and less social contact with their infants than do healthy mothers Naslund et al 1985;Persson-Blennow et al 1984, 1986. They are more remote, silent, and insensitive during mother-infant play (Riordan et al 1999;Snellen et al 1999).…”

“…Studies on the mother-child relationship reveal that the quality of maternal care from schizophrenic mothers is generally inferior to that from healthy mothers (Bosanac et al , 2003; Wan et al , 2008b). It has been reported that mothers with schizophrenia show fewer positive emotional responses and less social contact with their infants than do healthy mothers (Persson-Blennow et al , 1984; McNeil et al , 1985; Naslund et al , 1985; Persson-Blennow et al , 1986). They are generally more remote, silent, insensitive, and unresponsive during mother-infant play, and they are less demanding of their infants (Riordan et al , 1999; Snellen et al , 1999).…”

“…In addition, odor perception is important in forming bonds with peers in childhood (Sullivan, 2000). It is therefore interesting that risk for schizophrenia is associated with problems in maternal attachment (demonstrated at 3 days, 1, and 6 years of age; Naslund et al, 1984; Persson-Blennow et al, 1984; McNeil and Kaij, 1987), increased stress reactivity (Myin-Germeys and van Os, 2007), and fewer peer relationships (Schenkel and Silverstein, 2004), as well as olfactory processing deficits (Brewer et al, 2003). …”
