Offshore wind resource assessment using reanalysis data

Abstract: The growth rate of offshore wind is increasing due to technological advancement and reduction in cost. An approach using mast measured data at coastline and reanalysis data is proposed for offshore wind resource assessment, especially for developing countries. The evaluation of fifth generation European Reanalysis (ERA5) data was performed against measured data using statistical analysis. ERA5 data slightly underestimates wind speed and wind direction with percentage bias of less than 1%. Wind resource assessm… Show more

“…Pakistan has been suffering from energy crises since 2007 [1] due to the imbalance in the supply and demand of electricity [2][3][4]. The combustion of fossil fuels produces harmful emissions that cause global warming, environmental pollution, and climate change [5,6]. Due to the shortage of fossil fuels in the coming decades, they are becoming expensive and limited.…”

“…The energy demand is significantly increasing day by day around the globe in present day scenarios as reported by the International Energy Agency [1]. Due to the high emission rates from burning fossil fuels to meet the energy demand, alternative renewable energy resources are necessary, especially wind, solar and hydropower [2][3][4]. Hydropower has an advantage over wind and solar energy because it requires less capital cost and does not require additional storage capacity due to the variability of supply with time.…”
