Off-shell D-brane action at orderα2in flat spacetime

Abstract: We use compatibility of the second fundamental form corrections to DBI action at order α ′2 which includes trace of the second fundamental form, with T-duality and with the linear S-duality as guiding principles to find an off-shell D-brane action at order α ′2 in type II superstring theories in flat spcetime.

“…On the other hand, consistency of the effective action with the S-matrix element of one RR and one NSNS vertex operators, indicates that there is linear curvature 2 If one includes the trace of the second fundamental form −Ω a ai Ω b bj into the definition ofR ij , then the couplings of one closed string and two open strings can be symmetric under both linear T-duality and S-duality [26]. However, there are arguments that the D-brane effective action involving gauge field can not be invariant under S-duality for higher gauge fields [27]. Requiring the effective action to be only invariant under the linear T-duality, as we are going to use in this paper, then such extension forR ij is not required.…”

“…This can be seen from the α ′ -expansion of Q's in (27). The integrals Q and Q 2 have no massless pole and the massless pole in Q 1 produces contact term after multiplying it with p 3 ·V ·p 3 which appear in the string amplitude (25).…”

“…In the static gauge, i.e., X a = σ a and X i = φ i , the components of the projection operator ⊥ αβ become ⊥ ab = 0, ⊥ ai = −∂ a φ i and ⊥ ij = η ij to the linear order of transverse scalar field in which we are interested. So one can extend the couplings (5) On the other hand the four open string corrections to the DBI action at α ′2 order have been found in [15]. These couplings, that appear in three families, include the couplings of four scalar fields, four gauge fields and two scalars and two gage fields.…”
