Off‐grid hybrid renewable energy system for rural healthcare centers: A case study in Nigeria

Abstract: Presented in this study is an optimal hybrid renewable off‐grid energy system model that supplies a typical rural healthcare center across the six regions in Nigeria. A technical and economic evaluation was carried out to identify the optimal off‐grid hybrid energy system combination based on photovoltaic (PV), wind, diesel generator and battery. Due to governments’ fuel subsidy in many developing countries, the pump price of fuel is reduced and not a true reflection of what is obtainable in a deregulated mark… Show more

“…Despite the increasing research focused on HRES in the rural setting, few have explored its application in the context of rural healthcare facilities. Moreover, these research projects have only focused on Nigerian healthcare facilities (Babatunde, Adejoda, Babatunde, & Denwigwe, 2019;Esan et al, 2019;Olatomiwa, Blanchard, Mekhilef, & Akinyele, 2018;Oviroh & Jen, 2018;Salisu et al, 2019) and other countries in the Global South (Franco et al, 2017). These studies all conclude that shifting to HRES for the facilities will result to lower COE and CO 2 emissions.…”

“…Applying the renewable energy suppliers for healthcare centers in the rural regions became attractive as reported in [18,19]. They considered optimal design of hybrid energy system combination of photovoltaic (PV), wind and battery storage system to obtain sustainable energize healthcare considering the off-grid state.…”

“…With specific reference to Nigeria, figures show that only 45% of Nigerians have access to electricity (Fakehinde et al, 2019). This access is both epileptic and unreliable (Abdulkareem, 2016;Babatunde et al, 2019;Nnaji, 2011;Nweke et al, 2016) with incessant grid collapse. In order to enjoy electricity when needed, most Nigerian homes and businesses have resulted to the use of captive gasoline and diesel generators due to poor electricity supply from the grid.…”
