In the present paper several aspects of the simulation of complex chemical equilibrium are discussed, using two research and educational software: gPROMS® and GAMS®. All computations are performed to boost the understanding of chemical engineering students, undergraduate, and graduate, of the complex concepts behind both thermo‐chemical processes and optimization techniques. Four case studies with varying levels of difficulty illustrate the proposed methodology and robustness of the modeling systems: Catalytic steam reforming of bio‐ethanol at high temperatures. Partial oxidation of naphthalene using either air or pure oxygen. Supercritical water gasification of Microalga Spirulina. Dry and mixed reforming of glucose.Our results indicate that the use of optimization tools offered bygPROMS® and GAMS®software are useful and efficient tools to calculate the chemical and phase equilibrium by minimizing the Gibbs energy, provided that adequate initial guesses are used. Furthermore, the computational time spent in the calculations was generally quite short. The obtained equilibrium compositions are benchmarked using the ubiquitous process simulators: ASPEN‐Plus® and/or ASPEN‐Hysys® as well as data available from the open literature. We obtained excellent agreement between our results and their counterpart obtained using ASPEN‐Plus®. In the last part of this manuscript, authors share their experience in supervising senior term projects on the subject. A questionnaire was used to collect qualitative and quantitative feedback from the nine students involved in the projects. Their responses to a questionnaire focused on the chemical engineering thermodynamics theory as well as software usage during their investigations. This questionnaire demonstrates that students can overcome mathematical complexity by either using mathematical software or equivalent modeling systems (e.g., Matlab®, Mathematica©, gPROMS®, and GAMS®).

Although the gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) system has better environmental performance, it still emits pollution gases such as CO 2 and NOx. It is reasonable and necessary to add the environmental cost to the power production cost of the GTCC system. Based on the structure theory of thermoeconomics, through the reasonable pricing of pollutants (considering the environmental costs of CO 2 and NOx emission), the system environmental thermoeconomic cost (ETC) model is developed in this study, which achieves absolute internalization of environmental costs. Taking GTCC with different gas turbine (GT) operation strategies as the research object, the influences of different operation strategies and environmental conditions on the GTCC system ETC are studied. The results of this study show that it is beneficial to maintain higher turbine inlet temperatures (T 3 ) and turbine outlet temperatures (T 4 ), thus ensuring better GTCC environmental thermoeconomic performance, and GTCC with the operation strategy (using inlet guide vane (IGV) control to maintain T 3 at the design value and then to keep T 4 at its maximum value (IGVT3-650-F) has the lowest ETC, which are 0.09429 $/ kW•h at 75% gas turbine load rate (GTLR) and 0.10079 $/kW•h at 50% GTLR, respectively; reducing the emission of pollutants can reduce the unit ETC; for the combustion chamber, as the pollutant generation component of GTCC unit, it is most affected by the environmental damage cost; reducing the inlet air temperature can improve the system environmental thermoeconomic performance.

Multi-fidelity simulation improves the simulation accuracy and captures more detailed information about aero engines under limited computing resources, which is implemented by coupling different levels of models using numerical zooming methods. However, there is an obvious problem in traditional zooming methods such as the iterative coupled zooming method or mini-map method: both the convergence and accuracy depend highly on the component general characteristic maps. Based on the investigation of a micro gas turbine, a direct zooming method (Cycle with CFD in it, CWCFD) is developed. It directly embeds the 3D CFD compressor and turbine model into a 0D component-level model without component general characteristic maps. Then, the CWCFD zooming method is compared with the traditional 0D component-level model in terms of the throttle characteristics of the micro gas turbine, and the experimental data of the ground test is performed to verify the effectiveness of the CWCFD zooming methods. The results indicate that the CWCFD zooming method matches well with the test data better than the traditional 0D component-level model.
