Oestrogen receptor values and histological grade in human breast cancer

Abstract: Histological grading of 126 oestrogen receptor positive and 81 oestrogen receptor negative breast carcinomas, using the WHO system, showed that some tumours in all grades had high receptor values, others low. There was no correlation between the receptor values and histological grade. It is suggested that factors other than the degree of dedifferentiation of the tumour may be responsible for the consistent tendency for receptor negative tumours to be placed in a high histological grade.

“…The method of grading was not specified. In the present study, as in that of Heusen et al (1975) and Thoresen et al (1981), the mean value of the receptors was similar in all three grades, and thus the significance of the association between grade and presence or absence of receptor is difficult to interpret. Silvestrini et al (1979) incidence of REC.…”

“…ER analysis had been carried out on the primary tumours [5]. The latter had also been graded histologically [6] in association w'ith a further study [7], The EVI status had been recorded previously [3) the series being reduced to 55 cases in which this was possible. Since then 5 patients have died of causes unrelated to their breast disease.…”
