Odontogenic myxoma: A causality dilemma – Report of a nonpareil case and review of literature

Abstract: Odontogenic myxoma is a benign locally aggressive neoplasm with a sparse prevalence and incertitude histogenesis. They constitute 3%–6% of odontogenic tumors in gnathic bones. It is ubiquitously seen between vicenarian to early quadragenarian group with female proclivity and fondness to the mandibular jaws. They are silent lesions clinically and show myxoid stroma amidst fibrous background. This report highlights central odontogenic myxoma in a 43-year-old male patient and focuses on concepts, differential dia… Show more

“…Intense Bcl-2 staining correlates with tumour aggressiveness whereas poor Bcl-2 staining indicates a lack of aggressiveness. 20 As an antiapoptotic protein, Bcl-2 helps to establish the persistence of the proliferative tumour cells. 4 In our case, there was diffuse Bcl-2 staining of the stromal cells and a low proliferative index of 2-4% as indicated by Ki-67.…”

“…Then later, the term was replaced by fibromyxoma, given by Dietrich et al [ 3 ]. In 2005, WHO categorized odontogenic myxomas as ectomesenchymal tumors, either including or excluding the odontogenic epithelium [ 4 ]. WHO did, however, classify odontogenic myxoma as central and peripheral forms of mesenchymal odontogenic tumors later in 2017.…”

“…Cuando el estroma de colágeno denso es evidente, el término fibromixoma / mixofibroma puede ser usado. Debido a este patrón dual, se cree que el mixoma odontogénico es precedido de fibroma odontogénico 6 .…”
