Odd dimensional manifolds with highly connected covers

Abstract

We show that for each integer [Formula: see text] any finite group [Formula: see text] acts smoothly and freely on a connected sum [Formula: see text] for some [Formula: see text]. Moreover, as a module over [Formula: see text], the middle dimensional homotopy group can be specified in advance to belong to the stable syzygy [Formula: see text].
