Ocular sarcoidosis: when should labial salivary gland biopsy be performed?

Abstract: In this study, the LSGB sensitivity (18.75 %) in the patients with proven sarcoidosis appears to be lower than in other reports. Our results suggest that this investigation is a possible method of tissue diagnosis in patients with raised ACE and/or CT scan pattern compatible with sarcoidosis, and should not be performed in patients with unexplained uveitis or because of their ophthalmological features.

“…There is a need for other biomarkers in sarcoidosis, such as chitotriosidase for instance . In some circumstances, biopsy of minor salivary glands can be of help . Lastly, 18 F‐FDG PET scanner could also have a place in case of undetermined uveitis as it may reveal focal up‐take suggestive of sarcoidosis and guide the choice of a biopsy site …”

“…Two studies have recently reported the interest of BMSG for the histologic diagnosis of sarcoidosis in uveitis patients [130,131]. The positivity rate was 5.2 and 3%, respectively, in these two studies.…”
