Ocular dominance and patient satisfaction after monovision induced by intraocular lens implantation

Abstract: Success and patient satisfaction in monovision patients were significantly influenced by the magnitude of ocular dominance. The balance technique seems to be a good method to evaluate the quantity of ocular dominance and prospectively evaluate the monovision technique.

“…Accurate determination of ocular dominance is useful in clinical decision-making, as it relates to monovision management of presbyopia [37][38][39] with intraocular lens implant in cataract surgery, 40,41 contact lenses, 39,42 or LASIK. 43,44 The determination of ocular dominance has mainly been based on sighting dominance, which takes little time to perform.…”

“…Seventy-six percent of patients with a macular hole in their dominant eye presented due to symptoms, whereas only 36% with a macular hole in their nondominant eye presented due to symptoms. 14 The relationship between ocular dominance and patient satisfaction with monovision by intraocular lens implantation has been investigated by Handa et al, 15 who determined ocular dominance using the distance hole-in-the-card sighting dominance test and a binocular rivalry balance sensory dominance technique. The authors conclude that strength of sighting dominance seems to be an important factor for patient satisfaction with monovision.…”

“…Recently, this technique was adapted for laser refractive surgery in patients older than 40 years, while correcting the myopic patient or overcorrecting the hyperopic patient, as well as, for patients with bilateral cataract (6)(7) . Once the crystalline lens is removed, there is a loss of accommodation creating a population of pseudophakic presbyopes.…”
