Ocular Anti-Inflammatory Actions of Matrine

Abstract: Matrine is an alkaloid isolated from the root of Sophora subprostrata (Leguminosae) which has been used as a Chinese medicine for the treatment of inflammation.Instillation of 50 ul of 1% matrine showed significant inhibition of ocular inflammation induced by lens proteins. Unlike corticosteroids, matrine did not facilitate the IOP recovery in rabbit eyes nor did it change the electrical potential difference across rabbit iris-ciliary body. These results indicate that matrine could become a safer ocular antiinf… Show more

“…For example, the previous experimental studies have shown the anti-inflammatory actions of Matrine, the antiangiogenic effect and anti-IL1B expression of Sinomenine, the immune-regulatory effect of Berberine [6871], and synergistic effects between Matrine and Sinomenine [20], which proved the outputs of our platform. Although the target networks of QLY need to be further experimentally determined, this platform is useful for uncovering the systematic-level mechanisms that are not easily detectable in experimental studies.…”

“…Quinolizidine alkaloids have been found to be its chief active components in Sophora flavescens including matrine, oxymatrine, sophocarpine, sophoridine and other alkaloids (9). Basic and clinical studies have shown that these alkaloids possess a variety of pharmacological effects including anti-inflammation (10,11), immunity-regulation (12), antivirus (6) and antitumor action (13)(14)(15).…”

“…Hence, matrine was used widely in clinical treatment in China (26). Aqueous solution of matrine (1%, w/w) showed significant inhibition of ocular inflammation induced by lens proteins (27). Matrine eye drops can be used to treat the bacterial keratitis and bacterial conjunctivitis (28).…”
